Im Neuenheimer Feld 289 Branch library for medicine and natural sciences
The Neuenheimer Feld branch is the branch of the University Library on the natural sciences and medical campus of Heidelberg University. It is the central lending library and learning centre for students and scientists in the natural and life sciences, including medicine. It is also responsible for supplying literature and information to Heidelberg University Hospital.

Services
At our Service Desk, you can get help with questions about searching for medical and scientific literature. Books from the textbook collection and the open-stack section can be borrowed immediately at the Service Desk (self-service from the shelves). To borrow items, you need a library card. The borrowing conditions are governed by the Library Regulations in conjunction with the Library Fee Schedule. Fees for overdue items and special services are charged in accordance with the library fee schedule.
Use and equipment
Jackets, coats, and non-transparent bags must be stored in the lockers in the entrance area. Bringing in drinks or food is not permitted, with the exception of water in transparent bottles. Quiet is required in the reading areas. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Since the number of readers often exceeds the available seating, reservations are not possible.

book collection
- Textbook collection of the departments of Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Earth Sciences, containing over 35,000 copies of standard textbooks and academic literature. Subject-specific textbook collection catalogs provide information about the holdings. Further information can be found via the links provided.
- Open-access magazine: Over 84,000 scientific and medical monographs published since 1975. The collection is organized according to the Regensburg Classification System (RVK).
- Access to electronic journals (e-journals) via the computer lab.
- Regional and national daily and weekly newspapers (cannot be checked out).
Book orders
- Parts of our collections cannot be borrowed, e.g. titles published before 1900 and other protected materials. However, these titles can be ordered and used within the reading room. Please note that ordered books are kept for inspection in the Reading Room for five days only. If not claimed within this time frame they will be brought back to the strong room. After first use the books remain in the Reading Room for four weeks. They can be renewed for another four weeks. Inter library loan books will be kept in the Reading Room for the complete loan period of four weeks whether claimed or not.
- Books before 1700 and other valuable works can only be viewed in the special collections department.
- Please note: For conservation reasons photocopying is not always permitted. If you need photocopies of protected material you can order reproductions.
- Books marked with red dots are for reference only. They may only be checked out overnight or on holidays.
