Welcome to Germany's oldest university library and the largest scientific library of Baden-Württemberg. As the central lending library we provide literature and information for the whole University of Heidelberg.

The Student ID-Card is also a library card for Heidelberg University Library. Once students have received the Student ID-Card they must register at the loan services desk of Heidelberg University Library in order to use the Student ID-Card as a library card. All other users are issued a simple library card by our loan services.
Whereas the reading rooms and the information services can be visited without registration, a library card or the new Student ID-Card is required in order to borrow items, to order items from the closed stacks and to use our electronic services.
Search and find publications
Library holdings (books, periodicals, videos, electronic media ...) of the University Library and of the Departmental Libraries from publication year 1968
onwards are registered in HEIDI, our catalogue. HEIDI provides information about location and availability of any library item.

The textbook collections of the Main Library and of the Neuenheim Branch Library contain textbooks and similar materials relating to all areas of study. The books are arranged by subject matter, are on open shelving and each title is available in multiple copies. The items are registered in our online catalogue HEIDI and in special lists.

The Enquiry and Reference Services of Heidelberg University Library (Main Library and Neuenheim Branch Library ) offer access to an extensive reference collection of general, biographical and bibliographical reference books. You will find workstations to use the electronic services of Heidelberg University Library (catalogues, databases, e-journals, e-books) and get access to the Worldwide Web.

The Main Library Reading Room provides access to a collection of standard research literature and literature for students on humanities and social sciences. The Reading Room is equipped with ca. 350 reading places.
The Reading Room of the Neuenheim Branch Library provides access to a collection of standard research literature and literature for students on medicine and sciences. The Reading Room is equipped with ca. 160 reading places. There are also group study rooms.

The Multimedia Centre MMZ (on the first floor of the Main Library) holds facilities to use electronic and audiovisual media. Students and staff of the University of Heidelberg are allowed to compile electronic documents. In the Multimedia Centre we provide network connection (Wireless LAN) for laptop users, too.
