Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

The study examines intertextual traces in Paul Auster's novels that lead to the works of the transcendentalists (Emerson and Throeau), to the "dark" classics of the American Renaissance (Hawthorne, Melville and Poe), and, finally, to French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. The three philosophical positions that these texts represent -- Emerson and Thoreau's optimistic metaphysics, the "dark" metaphysical doubt in Hawthorne, Melville and Poe, and the poststructuralist disclaimer of anything metaphysical, with its explanation of meaning as a mere effect of the relation of signs to one another -- delimit a "trilemma" that leads into the center of Auster's work. Here, fundamental aspects of Auster's play with symbols in nature in opposition to symbols in the man-made world are decrypted along with his treatment of identity and double consciousness, and metaphysical versus relational concepts of language
