Abstract

- l4 n. Chr.) bis zur Herrschaft Konstantins I. (312 – 337 n. Chr.).

Whereas the antiquities have upto now mainly dealt with the original form and function of such actions, this study concentrates on the discourse about rituals as well as on the changes in ritual activities. In order to analyse this field of study the following areas have to be investigated: the various forma of discourse, the people involved, the communinicative context, the argumentative pattern and the interdependency of discourse and ritual dynamics. The period of study reaches from the principality of Augustus (27 BC-14 AD) until the reign of Constantine I (312-337 AD). Geographically speaking, we are talking about the Greek mainland and the Aegeyan Sea, Macedonia and Asia Minor. The sources used fort his study are literary evidences and the vast epigraphical tradition which has not yet been given the due consideration. In this regard the analysis of rituals fort he people, the divinities, the benefactors and the deads yields the following conclusions. Three forms of discourse have to be distinguished: Ritual critisism reflects either the change of rituals or it is itself a driving force fort he change. The discussion on normative interventions necessarily precedes the permanent reorganization of rituals. In addition to this normative discourse there ist the one depending on an individual situation. The issue thereby is not a permanently mandatory regulation of rituals for a large amount of people, but a temporary change of rituals which is limited to single ritual agents. In spite of this emphasis on ritual dynamics one aspect must not be overlooked: the evidence does not only underline this aspect, but also the stability of rituals over a long period of time.
