Sources for the history of art history – digitized (under construction)
The holdings of the specialised information service for art of Heidelberg University Library contain a comprehensive and impressive collection of original editions of sources related to art history and the theory of art.
The documents cover the entire period from the 17th up to the 20th Century, and have been written by renowned researchers such as Johann Joachim Winckelmann, Gottfried Semper, Heinrich Wölfflin and Jacob Burckhardt. A focus of the collection is on ground-breaking works which laid the foundations for the establishment of Art History as a discipline in the 19th Century. These works, which are central to the historical development of Art History, will be digitalised and made freely available via the Internet.
The collection is recorded on our local online catalogue HEIDI, SWB (Union Catalog of the South West German Library Consortium) and arthistoricum.net.
An overview of the digitized titles can be found here.
