1914-2014

The centennial of the outbreak of war in 1914 has renewed interest in the Great War and its impact on the course of the 20th century. With their unique collections, libraries and archives serve as crucial resources for scholars and teachers engaged with this topic around the world. Those who wish to address the impact of the Great War on the course of 20th-century history now have access to over 500,000 items and 600 hours of film footage in the online database Europeana.

The Heidelberg University library holds a variety of regional trench newspapers published during the Great War for soldiers on the front lines. In order to preserve these and other important wartime documents for posterity, conservators are supplying them with appropriate bindings and special packaging to ensure their availability to students and teachers for years to come.

The photographs depict sources held by the university library that were treated this year.
