Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

The thesis examines festive rituals in contemporary Morocco from a phenomenological perspective. These rituals, called lila in Moroccan Arabic, are staged, upon invitation and for a fee, by performance groups which trace their cultural roots to Moroccan Sufi-orders. Lilas combine a host of heterogenous performative elements, ranging from orthodox forms of Islamic worship to ecstatic practices of trance and possession. The thesis describes the structure of the lila as it is performed by two different groups, the Isawa and the Hamadsha. Diverse contexts of performance are examined regarding their relation to the form the ritual takes. Economic and social conditions of the groups are equally given consideration. Theoretically, rituals are conceptualized as modes of experience (fundamentally of sensory experience), in which cultural meaning is constituted by means of performative action. Applying a phenomenological theory of experience (based especially on the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty)to empirical ritual phenomena, the structural dynamics of the ritual constitution of cultural sense are minutely analyzed. Special attention is devoted to the experiential state of trance which is interpreted as the product of a process of communication taking place between participants' sensory faculties and ritual media. The cultural significance of the lila-ritual as a totality is located in its existential function; in its potential to embody and to make palpable central themes of cultural existence in Morocco.
