Abstract

Harrat Uwayrid is a volcanic field located on the eastern rift flank of the Red Sea graben in the northwestern part of the Arabian peninsula. Volcanic activity started in the late Miocene with mildly alkaline flood basalts and ended with Quaternary basanitic and foiditic cinder cones and flows that are most abundant in the central part of the volcanic field and contain abundant mantle xenoliths. These xenoliths contain important information on the thermal and chemical evolution of the lithospheric mantle. Most xenoliths are ordinary spinel peridotites with variable amounts of clinopyroxene. Based on XCr [= Cr/(Cr+Al)] of spinel and XMg [= Mg/(Mg+Fe2+)] of olivine, these peridotites can be classified into four types. Apart from the spinel peridotites, several spinel websterites, one spinel wehrlite, one clinopyroxene-bearing orthopyroxenite, one olivine-bearing clinopyroxenite and an exotic spinel-pargasite-phlogopite-olivine websterite were investigated. Most xenoliths bear evidence for (multiple) metasomatic overprint. The spinel-pargasite-phlogopite-olivine websterite, for example, contains Sr-bearing baryte in addition to Ba-rich pargasite and Ba-phlogopite. All three minerals are in textural equilibrium with the main mineral phases olivine, orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene indicating that the metasomatic overprint by which K, Ba, Sr and other components were added to the rock was followed by complete recrystallization. The abundances of Li and B in all minerals are relatively high, while those of Be are low, suggesting that the metasomatic agent was an aqueous fluid rather than a hydrous melt. Before incorporation into the host magma, the rock was infiltrated by melts that reacted with its minerals (second metasomatism). Phlogopite grains, for example, were decomposed into Ba-K-rich feldspar (celsian), Cr-rich spinel and Ba-K-rich melt (> glass) along their rims. Almost all xenoliths contain intergranular glass that locally forms larger patches. In most of these patches, small phenocrysts of olivine, clinopyroxene, spinel and amphibole are present. The original melts from which microphenocrysts and glass were formed, were not derived from the host magmas, as indicated by textural evidence. Locally, the minerals of the mantle rocks reacted with the infiltrated melts resulting in Cr-rich rims of spinel, spongy-type rims of clinopyroxene, the formation of secondary pargasite/kaersutite or decomposition of phlogopite. Chemical zonation patterns of mineral grains display limited heterogeneity in all but five xenoliths. The mantle source domains of most xenoliths experienced a prolonged period of cooling that, in some xenoliths, was followed by a heating event. Temperature (T) and pressure (P) estimates for all xenoliths fall into the ranges 800 to 1100 °C and 1.1 to 1.8 GPa. These PT conditions are compatible with a continental model steady-state geotherm corresponding to a surface heat flow of ~ 90 mW m-2. This result is in line with literature data obtained on xenolith populations from other Neogene to Quaternary volcanic fields in Saudi Arabia. However, direct measurements of surface heat flow in some volcanic fields yielded values that are considerably lower than 90 mW m-2. This apparent discrepancy indicates that thermal equilibrium (after the input of heat from the convecting part of the mantle) has not yet been reached in the lithosphere beneath Saudi Arabia. In the course of this study, detailed zonation patterns of Li, Be and B in minerals of 15 selected xenoliths were determined by secondary ionization mass spectrometry (SIMS). Li zonation patterns of clinopyroxene grains from most xenoliths exhibit a core-to-rim decrease, while Be and B are nearly constant. This rimward decrease in Li was most probably caused by a diffusive loss of Li into intergranular melts that infiltrated the lithospheric sources of the xenoliths before sampling by the host magmas. Using Li abundances measured in the cores of mineral grains and average abundances of Be and B, nearly constant inter-mineral partition coefficients for all three elements were obtained: DLiOl/Cpx = 1.74 ± 0.41, DLiOl/Opx = 1.75 ± 0.33, DLiOpx/Cpx = 0.98 ± 0.22; DBeOl/Cpx = 0.019 ± 0.008, DBeOl/Opx = 0.520 ± 0.031, DBeOpx/Cpx = 0.39 ± 0.25; DBOl/Cpx = 0.63 ± 0.19, DBOl/Opx = 1.03 ± 0.66, DBOpx/Cpx = 0.66 ± 0.23. Within the range of ~ 800 to 1100 °C, the partitioning of Li, Be and B between olivine, clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene is apparently independent of temperature. Li/Be and B/Be ratios can be used to discriminate between different metasomatic agents. Metasomatism by aqueous fluids that are not enriched in fluorine results in the addition of Li and B, while all three low atomic mass elements are added by melts.
