Abstract

the primary ojektive of this thesis was the study of the synthesis conditions, crystallization and the resultant parageneses of technicallzy important, crystalline compounds in the system CaO-SiO2-H2O. In this study both natural and synthetic calcium silicate hydrates were investigated bz such methods as XRD, DTA, IR and Raman spectroscopy, ESEM, TEM, AFM and quantitative phase analysis with the Rietveld method. Phases with previously unknown or poor understood structures such as Z-phase, 10Å tobermorite have been in particular investigated further. The structural relationships of the phases of the gyrolite group have been extensivelly studied ion this work. Additionally a mechanism of transition of Z-phase to K-phase and of gyrolite to truscottite upon dehydration was derived. A new structurall proposal for foshagite have been made based on Rietveld refinement. A reproducible synthesis was a very important premise for fullfilling the primary objective of ths work. Initaially C-S-H gels with C/S ratios varying between 0.5 and 2.0 have been synthesized under CO2-free conditions. The C-S-H gels were subsequently treated hydrothermally at different temperatures, transforming them to crystalline state. the stability ranges and the parageneses of the crystalline C-S-H phases have been ascertained. Further quantitative phase analyses have been performed on products of hydration of clinker minerals (alite, belite) which were subsequently hydrothermally cured at higher temperatures. finally, a hardened cement paste was treated hydrothermally at 150, 200 and 250°C. The products cured at 150 and 200°C consist mainly of crystalline alpha dicalcium silicate hydrate, which dehydrates to hydraulic dicalcium silicate. Thus it is a promising method for recycling of cament based building materials.
