Abstract

The redox speciation of the inorganic arsenic species As(III) and As(V) has deep influence on the element’s toxicity and mobility. Numerous sorption and redox processes occur in the groundwater between the solid phase and the soluble arsenic species. Manganese oxides and iron hydroxides play an important role thereby. Manganese(IV) oxides are known as good oxidants towards As(III), iron(III) hydroxides have strong sorbing sites with respect to both species. This thesis investigates the redox and transport behavior of arsenic influenced by manganese oxides and iron hydroxides. Processes have been observed by batch experiments at controlled geochemical conditions (e.g. sample compound, pH, influence of O2) with arsenic and MnO2 or FeOOH, respectively. The sorption and redox processes could be investigated by using eluation methods as well as solid phase surface analyses with XANES. The arsenic species sorbed onto the surfaces were determined to illustrate the influence of the solid on the arsenic species distribution. Sorption processes of arsenic on manganese oxides and iron hydroxides occur fast, whereas As(III) gets oxidized immediately at the manganese surface. The sorption strength of arsenic is relatively low at the MnO2 surface. This is in contrast to the strong sorption of As at FeOOH. Redox reactions between iron hydroxides and arsenic have not been described in the literature so far. The results of this work show a slow oxidation process of As(III) at iron hydroxide surfaces with relatively slow kinetics. This process is dependent on pH conditions, the As(III) concentrations at the surface and the As/Fe ratio. Reaction rates could be calculated as first estimations. In addition, As(III) transport was investigated in column experiments. The results were modelled with the geochemical computer program PHREEQC (Parkhust 1995). Three aquifer types were simulated in three columns (pure quartz sand, quartz sand with added FeOOH, quartz sand with added MnO2) and
