Abstract

Die „Entdeckung“ Amerikas und das damit einhergehende Aufeinandertreffen der Kulturen erschütterten und veränderten das Weltbild aller Beteiligten. Die vorliegende Studie bereichert unser Verständnis dieses Geschehens, das internationale Beziehungen und das Selbstverständnis der Kulturen bis heute prägt. Anhand von bislang wenig bekanntem Quellenmaterial wird rekonstruiert, wie Mitglieder des Ordens Unserer Lieben Frau der Barmherzigkeit (Mercedarier) im Gefolge europäischer Invasoren in den Andenraum gelangten und dort an der Herausbildung der kolonialen Gesellschaft beteiligt waren. Neben der Rolle der Mönche in den Eroberungs- und Bürgerkriegen und den Jahrzehnten indigenen Widerstands nimmt die Untersuchung auch die weltliche Gesetzgebung, die Konkurrenzsituation zu anderen Orden und dem Weltklerus und prominente Beispiele mercedarischer Missionsarbeit in den Blick. Eine Analyse der Ordensreform und der transatlantischen Beziehungen seiner Provinzen zeigt, wie die Mission letztlich erst in den Darstellungen mercedarischer Chronisten des 17. Jahrhunderts vollständig in das Selbstbild des gesamten Ordens integriert wurde.

El “descubrimiento” de América y el enfrentamiento de las culturas subsiguiente, convulsionaron y modificaron el concepto de mundo de ambos involucrados. El trabajo aquí presentado intenta enriquecer la comprensión de esos acontecimientos los cuales, hasta el día de hoy, marcan las relaciones internacionales y el autoentendimiento de las culturas. A través de materiales de archivo poco conocidos se reconstruye cómo miembros de la Orden de Nuestra Señora de la Merced (Mercedarios) llegaron a la zona andina en el séquito de los invasores europeos y cómo participaron en la formación de la sociedad colonial. Aparte del papel de los frailes en las guerras de conquista y civiles y de las décadas de la resistencia indígena, el trabajo se enfoca también en la legislación secular, la competencia con otras Ordenes y el clero secular, así también en algunos ejemplos destacados de la labor misionera de los Mercedarios. Un análisis de la reforma de la Orden y de las relaciones trasatlánticas de sus provincias demuestra, cómo la misión no fue integrada completamente a su propia imagen sino hasta las descripciones de los cronistas del siglo XVII.

Translation of abstract (English)

The “discovery“ of America and the accompanying convergence of cultures unsettled and altered the view of the world of everyone involved. The present study enriches our understanding of events that shape international relations and the cultural identities to this day. Little known archival material is used to reconstruct how members of the Order of Our Lady of Mercy (Mercedarians) reached the Andes in the retinue of the European invaders and participated in the formation of the colonial society. Besides investigating the friars’ role in the colonial and civil wars, as well as in the decades of indigenous resistance, the study also looks at secular legislation, rivalry with other Orders and clergy, as well as prominent examples of Mercedarian missionary work. An analysis of the Order’s reform and of the transatlantic relations of its provinces uncovers that it was only thanks to the works created by the Mercedarian chroniclers of the 17th century that the mission was wholly integrated into the Order’s self-perception.
