Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

The experiments shown in this thesis contribute to the understanding of the redox cycles of iron in soils, waters and sediments. The objectives include laboratory studies as well as field investigations and are described in 4 separate chapters. A short abstract of each chapter is given below. Abiotic mineralisation of phenolic substances The redox process involving iron(III) (in dissolved form and as the mineral phase ferrihydrite) and phenolic substances has been examined. We have investigated the relationship between structure and reactivity for the dihydrobenzene reductants catechol, hydroquinone and resorcine, and for the 2-methoxyphenol (guaiacol) with iron(III), by determining the rate of the Fe(III) reduction as well as the production of CO2. This work demonstrates that catechol and guaiacol will be effectively oxidized to CO2 by reducing iron(III). Hydroquinone shows a reduction in iron(III), but no accompayning mineralization could be determined. In contrast, resorcine showed no reaction with Fe(III). The deciding factor wether or not mineralization occurs is controlled by the position of the hydroxy groups. It is shown that phenolic substances with two hydroxy groups in the ortho position or at least one hydroxy group and a methoxy group can be oxidized to CO2 while iron (III) is reduced. Halogenated organic compounds In this chapter, a new natural source of volatile halogenated organic compounds as a reaction product between reactive organic matter (catechol, humic substances) and an electron acceptor such as Fe(III) is shown. It is considered that an abiotic reaction mechanism should exist in soils that forms alkyl halides such as chloromethane, chlorothane, dichloroethane, 1-chloropropane, 2-chloropropane and trichloromethane. During this processes, halides are methylated, and the methyl halides formed represent degradation products of oxidized organic matter. Ethoxylated and propoxylated phenolic structures could be responsible for the occu
