Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

The dissertation offers a comparative literary analysis of poems by Stefan George (1868 – 1933) and William Butler Yeats (1865 – 1939), which are generally characterized as not easily accessible. In this process, it aims to identify and categorize the textual strategies aimed at making the texts look opaque. The dissertation discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the positions of hermeneutics and deconstruction but contends that the Constance branch of reader-response criticism offers a particularly fruitful means to analyse hermetic texts. The approach highlights the reader’s perception and offers important insights into the ways it is manipulated by textual strategies. Apart from reader-response criticism, the dissertation relies on Bourdieu’s praxeology to explore the ways in which George and Yeats use hermetic poems to serve ritualistic purposes. Poetry was a means to ensure solidarity among the groups they formed. George and Yeats pursued the utopian idea to form an artistic elite and turn it into the nucleus of a renewal of German and Irish culture, respectively.
