Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

Since the days of Plato and Aristotle people have been discussing a possible link between creativity and mental disorders. Scientific research has often focused on depression, bipolar mood disorders, and schizophrenia in relation to creativity. However, existing research has produced inconsistent evidence and a conclusive theory explaining how exactly mental disorders can facilitate creativity is still missing. In an exploratory, naturalistic one-sample-pre-post design this dissertation investigated whether students making use of psychotherapeutic counselling show significant correlations between mental disturbance and creativity. Data about type and severity of mental disturbance, satisfaction with life and studies, analytic and creative thinking, and everyday creative activities were gathered and analyzed. The longitudinal part of this dissertation focused on changes of severity of mental disorders and creativity over the course of counselling. An integrative model of counselling was developed and published (Holm-Hadulla, Hofmann & Sperth, 2009). Data analysis is based on data from 554 university students seeking psychotherapeutic counselling, of which 149 clients contributed to the longitudinal data set. The results show that students consulting a Psychotherapeutic Counselling Service are substantially impaired. Adjustment disorders and depressive symptoms are common among the clients, who are also dissatisfied with their private life and studies. Performance on analytic and creative thinking tasks was average despite significant mental disturbance. While analytic thinking showed some significant negative correlations with mental disturbance, creative thinking proved to be independent from mental disturbance. Satisfaction with life and studies was independent of analytic and creative thinking. Everyday utilization of the creative potential and interest in creative tasks showed many significant negative correlations with mental disturbance. Global severity as well as essential areas of impairment like depressive mood, diffuse anxiety and agitation and self-worth issues showed consistent negative correlations with creative shaping of everyday tasks. Depressive symptoms proved to be an important factor impairing the implementation of the creative potential in everyday activities. Significant positive correlations were found between satisfaction with life and studies and the implementation of the creative potential in everyday activities. When comparing the data points before and after counselling a significant reduction of mental impairment in many areas was found, but especially in those areas which were most pronounced prior to the first counselling session. The changes were mostly of medium effect size. The percentage of clients suffering from clinically relevant impairment was considerably reduced. The test values for analytic and creative thinking showed significant but small increases. For the utilization of the creative potential in the shaping of everyday activities no significant global increase could be documented. However, on the level of single items referring to activity, self-confidence, delight in divergent thinking and cognitive flexibility, significant increases were found. These items also showed significant correlations with decreases in severity of mental problems and increases in satisfaction. In the discussion of the results, a distinction between creative thinking as a potential for creativity and creative shaping of everyday activities as the realization of this potential is recommended. The results have shown that the realization of the creative potential in the shaping of everyday activities is adversely affected by mental disturbance, while creative thinking as the potential for creativity is still possible in a structured test environment. Furthermore, the positive correlations between creative shaping of everyday activities and satisfaction with life and studies indicate that satisfaction with the status quo is relevant for the realization of the creative potential. The importance of mental disturbance in general and the depressive syndrome in particular for the ability to creatively shape everyday activities is discussed with respect to “structuring ability” and “energy/drive”. The realization of the creative potential in the shaping of everyday activities and mastering of the creative process requires the ability to structure activities and to focus available (psychic) energy which is more difficult to do while suffering from mental disturbance. In addition, the results are discussed in respect to the therapeutic context and counselling.
