Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine whether the ecotoxicological potential of particulate matter changes within a specific plant (“Plant A”). Furthermore comparable samples from a different plant (“Plant B”) were taken as these plants differ in their used materials but not in the process engineering. To evaluate the impact of the exhaust air of “Plant A” on the nearby city was also an important part of this study. To determine the potential to induce damages the samples of particulate matter were ex-tracted with acetone and tested for their effects in a variety of bioassays (Comet Assay, Mi-cronucleus-Assay, Ames-Test, ELISA). In “Plant A” clear genotoxic effects could be shown when testing the samples from ambient air. Those effects could be neutralized by the air filter system installed in the plant. It could also be shown that the chemical composition (the qual-ity of the particles) is responsible for these effects. The exhaust air also showed a clear genotoxic potential. However, it could be shown that the quantity of extracted material not the quality was responsible for these effects. The comparison to „Plant B“ revealed that the plants show an equal genotoxic potential in the ambient and the filtered air. The samples of part II in “Plant B” show much less genotoxic activity when comparing the results to the corresponding sample point in „Plant A“. As the main difference between the plants is the used material, this must be the reason for these differences. To evaluate whether the exhaust air of „Plant A“ has a negative impact on the quality of the ambient air of the city, for one year an immission measurement along the main wind direction was performed. The results show that the exhaust air does not have a negative impact on the quality of the city air, regarding the evaluated endpoints. Nevertheless genotoxic effects caused by samples of this examination could be shown. These effects could be correlated with the temperature and the concentration of nitric oxide in the air at the time of sampling. The effects caused by the samples of the immission measurement are therefore generated by the surrounding traffic and possibly by home firing systems used during the cold season. The chemical analysis showed an indication that a possible source could also be the near garbage incineration plant. The obtained results indicate that the vent stack should not be entered without the appropri-ate protective clothing. For long-term planning procedural changes to reduce the quantity of particulate matter the results of this study should be considered. In part II of “Plant A” ac-cording to this study the same material should be used as in “Plant B”.
