Registration and Lending Service

The Student ID-Card serves as a library card for Heidelberg University Library. After you have unlocked your UniID, you can sign up online with Heidelberg University Library.

All other users are issued a library card by our lending service.

All visitors of the library can access our reading rooms and information centres. A library card or student ID-Card is required, however, when ordering or borrowing items and to get access to our digital services.

Search and find publications

Online research in the libraryIn our catalogues you can find the University library’s holdings as well as Departmental Library holdings. All media (books, periodicals, videos, electronic media ...) from publication year 1962 onwards are registered in our catalogue HEIDI. HEIDI provides information about location and availability of any library item.

Textbook Collection

Textbook collectionOur textbook collections at the Main Library and the Neuenheim Branch Library contain frequently used textbooks. They are on open shelving, arranged by subject matter and each title is available in multiple copies. Textbooks can be found in our online catalogue HEIDI and on textbook lists.

Information Centre / information services

Research at the workstationsThe computers at the Information Centre provide access to our digital services (catalogues, databases, e-journals, e-books) and the internet.

Reading Places (University Library as a Learning Center)

Studying in the Reading RoomThe Main Library Reading Room provides a collection of standard research literature and literature on humanities and social sciences. It is equipped with ca. 1,000 study desks and places to read.

The Reading Room at the Neuenheim Branch Library provides access to a collection of standard research literature and literature on medicine and natural sciences. It is equipped with ca. 160 study desks.

Both Reading Rooms provide group study rooms as well as overhead scanners which can be used to scan to USB and are free of charge.

The Multimedia Centre MMZ (on the first floor of the Main Library) holds facilities to use electronic and audiovisual media. Students and staff of the Heidelberg University can use the computers to create and edit electronic documents.

WLAN can be accessed on your phone, laptop and other devices anywhere in the library.

Training Courses and Library Tours

Poster advertising training coursesHeidelberg University Library offers a a variety of guided library tours and training courses for beginners and advanced library users. For beginners, we recommended the introduction to using the Main Library / Neuenheim Branch to get familiar with the library and doing research in our catalogues and databases. In addition to that we offer subject-specific courses, both basic and advanced, and introductions to reference management systems such as EndNote or Citavi.
