Illuminated Manuscripts From Monastery Libraries in South-west Germany Manuscripts from Reichenau and the Abbey of St. Peter in the Black Forest

The project aims to systematically catalogue the art-historically significant illuminations in manuscripts held by the Badische Landesbibliothek Karlsruhe (BLB) from the monastery libraries of Reichenau Island and the Abbey of St. Peter in the Black Forest using a database. Two hundred and two manuscripts have been preserved from the former monastery library of the Abbey of St. Peter in the Black Forest, 133 of which feature elaborate illuminations. Four hundred and twenty-nine manuscripts originate from Reichenau, 119 of which also feature illuminations. A total of approximately 3,350 illustrations (including decorative initials and borders) are to be catalogued.
The project results will be combined with the results of earlier projects, including those funded by the Stiftung Kulturgut Baden-Württemberg, in a shared environment, making them searchable and comparable. This portal offers the potential to integrate data on the holdings of other monastery libraries in south-western Germany in the future.
