15.6.2026 The new eduVPN service is in a trial phase

The University Computer Centre (URZ) is now making the new “eduVPN” service for mobile devices available to Heidelberg University staff on a trial basis. The aim is to further develop secure access to the university network and to simplify the use of VPN. The existing Cisco VPN service remains available without restriction.

The introduction of eduVPN may affect the use of the University Library’s digital services, as a so-called ‘split’ mode is set by default, which distinguishes between university services—such as access to work emails—and the rest of the internet. Without an IP address on the university network, some publishers and platforms may not recognise the access correctly, meaning that licensed e-books, e-journals or databases may not be accessible despite an active VPN connection.

Should problems arise when accessing e-media, the University Library recommends switching to non-split mode. In this mode, all internet traffic is routed via the university network, ensuring that authentication with providers works reliably. The existing Cisco Secure Client can also continue to be used in the Non-Split mode, which is the default setting there.
