22.6.2026 New library catalogue and new library management system

From 22 June 2026, Heidelberg University Library will be using a new library management system. At the same time, the library catalogue will be given a new search interface in the form of WorldCat Discovery. This change will fundamentally modernise the technical infrastructure for the provision of literature as well as numerous internal workflows.

After more than 25 years, the University Library is replacing its existing library system, SISIS-SunRise, with WorldShare Management Services (WMS) from the library service provider OCLC. As the previous system is no longer being developed, it is being replaced by a modern, cloud-based platform. The library management system forms the basis for key library processes, ranging from the acquisition and cataloguing of materials to the lending of items and the management of user accounts. With the introduction of WMS, these processes will be placed on a technically future-proof footing.

At the same time, the existing HEIDI library catalogue will be replaced by WorldCat Discovery. In future, users will be able to search via a modern search interface that provides access to the printed and electronic holdings of Heidelberg University’s library system, whilst also drawing on an international database containing billions of bibliographic records. This will make it easier to search for books, e-books, journals and other academic resources. Naturally, basic account functions such as borrowing, placing orders and renewals will remain available.

The system change is one of the largest projects undertaken by the University Library in recent years. As part of the transition, extensive catalogue data, user accounts and loan information have been transferred, and numerous interfaces and workflows have been reconfigured. The aim is to ensure as smooth a transition as possible to day-to-day library operations.

The University Library asks its users for their understanding should any restrictions or unfamiliar procedures arise in the first few days following the switchover.
