28.9.2026  eduVPN service also available to students

Potential problems when using digital media

The University Computer Centre (URZ) is now making the new eduVPN service for mobile devices available to students at Heidelberg University on a trial basis. The aim is to further develop secure access to the university network and to simplify the use of VPNs. The existing Cisco VPN service remains available without restriction.

Problems may arise when using the University Library’s digital resources with eduVPN. By default, the so-called ‘split’ mode is set. This distinguishes between university services and other internet traffic. Without an IP address from the university network, some publishers and platforms may not recognise the access correctly. As a result, licensed e-books, e-journals or databases may not be available despite an active VPN connection.

Should you encounter problems accessing e-resources, the University Library recommends switching to ‘No-Split’ mode in eduVPN. This routes all internet traffic via the university network, ensuring that authentication with the providers works reliably. The existing Cisco Secure Client can also continue to be used, as No-Split mode is set as the default. Instructions on how to do this are provided on the information page on using e-resources with a VPN (see link below).

If you are unable to access e-resources despite having configured the relevant settings, please send an email to the University Library’s e-journal team.
