William M.F. Petrie (1853-1942)
Der englische Ägyptologie Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie leitete mehrere Ausgrabungen im Nildelta, wie etwa beim Tempel von Tanis und im griechischen Naukratis sowie in der Region des Fayums. Bekannt wurde er jedoch vor allem durch seine systematischen Grabungen, wobei der Keramik sein besonderes Interesse galt. So schlug er als Erster anhand von Schichtenabfolgen bei den Keramikfunden ein chronologisches System vor, das eine relative Datierung ermöglichte – eine für seine Zeit revolutionäre Idee. 1926 verließ er Ägypten, um in Israel seine Grabungen fortzusetzen, wo er im Alter von 89 Jahren starb.
