Abstract

New methods of archaeological research on pottery were developed and tested with an earthenware from South Japan, which is representative for prehistoric pottery world wide. This "Narikawa pottery" is not yet well understood and seems to represent an ethnic group (Hayato) that lived south to the emerging Japanese state (Yamato state). The pottery was produced under badly controlled conditions and seems to continue a few barely specialised forms of older pottery groups over 4 centuries (3rd through 7th centuries AD?) without significant change. Barely specialised forms and wide variation in individual pots besides large amounts of sherd finds in its distribution area require a highly sophisticated system of find collection, documentation, and classification. -- Main part of the present research deals with these methodological and theoretical problems based on the following ideas: (1) Standardised and spontaneous photography instead of drawings; (2) Size measurement, definition of form and pot parts according to a new, generally applicable system of index points set in the photography; (3) Digital storage and documentation in varying formats; (4) New kind of classification developed -- among others -- on the grounds of history of biological classifications and according to the following principles: (a) Basis of a classification are not only those traits of the object itself that were created intentionally, but also traits that developed unintentionally but systematically as well as observations in the find context, all these changing with classification purpose; (b) The ideal character of traits and observations is not "objectivity" and "quantification" but rather meaning; meaning has to be extracted, composed, or derived from originally meaningless traits and observations; this is a dialectical process over several steps which uses various methods like reasoning or statistics beside others; (c) Purpose of a classificatory process are "true classifications" which can use different data or methods with respect to varying meanings. -- These ideas and tools developed theoretically were tested with the above mentioned earthenware from the south Japanese site of Tsujidôbaru: Data collection and documentation as well as the development of meaningful traits in the realm of "pottery production" in order to create a true classfication. Research results concerning raw material, fabric processing, burning, colour, surface treatment produced new und unexpected results. Research in other realms like "aesthetics", "function" etc. are still to be done.
