Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

Effects of processing quantity and processing effort are commonly used by cognitive psychologists to explain time estimation and time illusion. In the present paper processing effort is interpreted in terms of levels of processing. N=84 subjects in a time estimation experiment had to process 10 or 15 prototypical acoustic stimuli under low-depth or elaborated conditions before producing the estimated time interval and giving a verbal estimation. In accordance with our hypothesis, experimental effects of number of stimuli occured as well as effects of levels of processing, producing time underestimation with growing depth of processing in a production paradigm. Because of the importance of the effect, an additional experiment with 58 new subjects was run. The results replicated the effect. Thus, an extension of the "levels of processing"-approach to the phenomenon of time illusion can efficiently be demonstrated.
