Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

The cognitive interest of this study is especially focused on the genesis of expertise in the sport of tennis. The observation of exceptional, individual performances – in music, mathematics or sports – inspires inevitably the urge to describe, understand and possibly explain their origins. The existence of empirical knowledge about the developmental processes of current top athletes – from their childhoods to their career peaks – is of great value, especially for people who are involved in fostering young and performance-oriented tennis talents. The transition from the junior to the professional (adult) sector seems in turn to be a neuralgic phase whose successful completion is considered a milestone on the way to becoming one of the top 100 tennis players in the world. The theoretical foundation of the topic of interest is foremost based on an approach which – corresponding to the broad term “development” – must consider general processes of change. This perspective of development is concentrated on changes in specified areas and contexts in the lives of tennis talents and top athletes, who have obtained expertise (partial expertise respectively) in the domain of tennis. A predominantly person-centered, holistic approach of explaining the processes of change in lives – as outlined here – renders obvious to contemplate about the processes of development and socialization. The empirical assessment makes use of a combination and integration of quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis respectively. A multi-methodic triangulation on the level of design is appropriate in order to measure up to the complexity of the phenomenon (the theoretical frame respectively) and to comprehend the occurrences adequately. The genesis of top performances in tennis is supposed to be retrospectively traced, accordant to the approach of expertise, by utilizing individual, time-referred life data as well as by employing biographic-subjective interpretations and patterns, which in turn are derived from qualitative case studies (problem-centered, semi- standardized interviews). Dynamic-procedural characteristics, concretely intra-individual developments and changes during the study “Tennis Professionals” (talent development) respectively, are obtained by examining the reconstructions of individual lives and by looking at biographical interpretation of corresponding careers. Documented subject areas: (1) Performance development/athletic career progress, (2) dual-burden school and tennis, (3) characteristics of careers in the (institutional) foster system, (4) training and competition, (5) coach, parents/family, friends, (6) intentional self-development/endogenous resources, (7) psychological pressure, specific results and burdens. The results uphold, among other things, the basic assumption in expertise research, according to which external factors have a major impact on the career progress. In tennis, financial resources and parental support are particularly important. Furthermore, the group of athletes with the highest level of education and a highly dynamic performance development at the beginning of their professional career was identified by means of cluster analysis as the most disregarded set. Adequate measures on the side of institutional foster facilities, such as support of talents beyond the age of 18, are indicated in order to free further potential.
