Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

Against the background of past theoretical and empirical studies this analysis examines primarily the causal-order between foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows and economic growth in 6 Latin American countries. The increased inflows of FDI to emerging countries over the last decades raise the question of how these inflows affect their economies and what the interaction between FDI and growth is. While there is considerable evidence on the link between FDI and economic growth in theoretical as well as empirical economic literature, the causality between them has not been investigated in a reasonable procedure. Three possible cases are investigated in this paper 1) Growth-driven FDI, is the case when the growth of the host country attracts FDI 2) FDI-led growth, is the case when the FDI improves the rate of growth of the host country and 3) the two way causal link between them. The empirical results support the hypothesis of GDP-driven FDI for 2 of the 6 countries under investigation (Brazil and Colombia). That means that economic growth in these countries has a causal impact on investment decisions of multinational firms. The hypothesis of FDI driven growth is supported in 2 cases (Argentina and Mexico). Finally, for Chile and Venezuela, there seems to be a two way causal link between economic growth and FDI.
