Abstract

We built up a diagnostic tool in order to obtain an early diagnosis of Glaucoma by reliable measurements of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness. Due to the linar form birefringence of the RNFL its thickness can be measured by the determination of the retardation of light using the electro-optical ellipsometer and the Muellermatrix formalism. A scanning unit allows to examine an area of 25° x 25° on the retina. To change the polarisation states of the probing light two pairs of electro-optical modulators are used. A new method using physiological properties in the Macula compensates for the perturbing corneal birefringence. The phase retardation and RNFL thickness along a circle (D=3 mm) around the papilla is of interest, because their mean values represent the status of the RNFL since all the nerve fibers cross the circle. The electro-optical ellipsometer provides fast and highly reproducible measurements of the RNFL because no moving elements are used.
