Abstract

This work consists of two parts. In the first part, a new technique to obtain vertical hydrochemical profiles in fully screened wells is developed. The Dual Pumping Technique (DPT) is an alternative to packer installations or similar equibment. In two case studies, the DPT was used to determine vertical concentration distributions of chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents and tritium. Comparison of results from a multilevel well and the seperation pumping technique shows that the DPT can be applied to gain vertical concentration profiles. In addition, a simple method to measure position of the water divide with an uncalibrated impeller flowmeter was developed and results were compared with measurements from a heat pulse flowmeter. In the second part, three case studies were perfomed to date shallow groundwater with the aid of several anthropogenical produced tracer. The tracers 3H, 20Ne, 22Ne, 85Kr, CFC's and firstly sulfurhexafluorid were used as age dating tools. A new iterative method to correct for excess air is presented. In one of the case studies concentrations of CFC-11 and CFC-12 show seasonal variation. Numerical simulation of flow and transport in the aquifer was applied. Transport of water in the unsaturated zone was considered under the assumption of hydraulic connection. Transport of CFC-113 can be retarded with respect to transport of SF6 and 85Kr. CFC-113 can therefore serve as a reactive tracer.
