Abstract

For a long time it was unclear whether or not vinylidene could exist as a free molecule for a certain time. In 1989 Erwin et al. were able to measure the photo-detachment spectra of vinylidene and the two deuterated isotopomers experimentally. These results could be simulated by Schork et al. by an ab initio calculation theoretically. Basing upon a reaction path formalism and a locally harmonic approximation which relies on the new energy surface of Schork, spectra, energy levels, lifetimes, and eigenfunctions of vinylidene and the deuterated isotopomers have been calculated in this diploma thesis. Two different methods have been applied: On the one hand a one dimensional reaction path potential has been calculated with the aid of a line integral and a mass weighted reaction path parameter. The effect of additional degrees of freedom has been included by zero point corrections. On the other hand a locally harmonic approximation has been applied and implemented by a Taylor expansion of the full 3D potential. Excellent agreement has been found between the spectra of the full 3D calculation and the harmonic approximation. However, the eigenfunctions of the harmonic approximation are more compact and concentrated near the vinylidene minimum. Therefore the lifetimes are larger and the time-dependent norm decreases more slowly than in the full 3D calculation.
