Abstract

In the framework of this thesis the new X-ray polarimeter PolarmaXs for highresolution X-ray spectroscopy for photons with energies up to 20 keV and with the possibility to simultaneously determine the polarization direction of linearly polarized photons was developed. Different concepts, which make use of Compton or Rayleigh scattering, were designed and simulated. The detector array consists of metallic magnetic calorimeters and has 64 X-ray absorbers. Every absorber is made of gold with a thickness of 30 μm whereby one can achieve an absorption efficiency of 96% at 20 keV. The entire detection area is 100mm². Every absorber is connected to a Ag:Er paramagnetic temperature sensor. The sensor converts the temperature change, caused by the absorption of a photon, into a magnetization change, which is then read out by a SQUID magnetometer. The polarimeter can achieve an energy resolution up to DeltaE_FWHM = 19 eV and polarization resolutions of DeltaPhi = 2°. Based on the simulations the detector array was developed and optimized, fabricated in the inhouse cleanroom of the institute and finally operated and characterized in a measurement setup at low temperatures.
