Abstract

The aim of the present study is to characterize the Portuguese computer terminology and its variation in computer-related discourse. Concretely, two terminologies are investigated here: the Glossário de Termos Informáticos, which was published by the IPQ Portuguese standardization institute based on international terminology standards, and the Microsoft Terminology Collection, which comprises over 100 languages. The Microsoft collection also takes into account different language varieties and differentiates between Brazilian and European Portuguese. Both terminologies are first described, using illustrative examples, in terms of the term-formation processes used, the influence of English, and the terminological divergences to be found. Following this analysis based on selected examples, the Microsoft terminology and the Glossário are then systematically investigated in terms of the processes employed in replacing loanwords and with respect to formal and semantic peculiarities; the relative proportions of loanwords, loan translations, and independent neologisms are also determined. The comparison between the Glossário and the Microsoft terminology on the one hand, and between the European and Brazilian varieties in Microsoft’s collection on the other hand, highlights the divergences between the respective equivalents in the Portuguese language. The theoretical basis of the investigation comprises terminology studies on the one hand, with its main areas of application, as well as language policy on the other hand, within which terminology planning can be assigned a clearly defined position.
