Abstract

In the Gnadensee, a part of Lake Constance (South Germany), and Lake Nussbaumen (Northern Switzerland) we took 13 cores in a line perpendicular to the shore. The cores have been investigated with sedimentological, mineralogical and geochemical methods. For our project the most interesting time period was between 1000 and 3000 BP cal. For the first time in the Lake Constance area I used carbonate concretions formed by macrophytes to reconstruct lake levels. For the time period between approximately 2700 and 2500 BP cal I found hints of human impact on Lake Nussbaumen in form of allochthounus input. There is no difference between allochthounus input caused by a rise of the lake level and the following allochthounus input caused by human influence. Allochthounus input caused by human activity in the sediments of the Gnadensee is likely in the time around 1600 BP cal and for the period between 1400 and 1500 BP cal. In the sediments of neither one of the lakes could any nutrient enrichment (P, K, Na) be registered. Neither could I find any anthropogenic caused enrichment of heavy metals in the examined part of the sediment cores. This could be explained by the negligible input (no ore smelting activities) and heavy dilution by the sediments themselves. The lake level of Lake Nussbaumen rose around 2750 BP cal. The water level kept its high level until approximately 2200 BP cal. The water table probably rose around 2500 BP cal for a period of 50 years after which it fell to the (already relatively high) previous lake level. The reconstruction of lake levels of the Gnadensee (and therefore of Lake Constance) is quite difficult because of the size of Lake Constance and its annual changes in the water level. In the sediment cores of the Gnadensee there was a hint of a lower lake level during the time period between 1800 and 2500 BP cal.
