Abstract

The main argument of my thesis is that the institutional development of Panchayati Raj between 1947 and 1992 can be analysed as an evolutionary process in the Darwinian sense. I base this on the conjecture that Evolutionary Institutionalism (EI) is the appropriate theoretical approach to do this. The argument is investigated based on two research questions: Can I arrive at the outcome of 1992 if I trace the developments as an institutional evolution from an EI perspective? Is the outcome inevitable?
