Abstract

Jarosite minerals AFe3(SO4)2(OH)6 are known to be scavengers for toxic elements. They are formed by the oxidation of FeS2 and the weathering of clay minerals and are only stable in acidic, sulfate-rich environments. Therefore, a better understanding of the factors that control the rate of jarosite stability is essential for the assessment of dangerous pollution of the environment. The effect of A-cations (K, Na, H3O) on the crystal lattice of jarosites is studied. Synthesized jarosites are investigated by X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure of Na- and H3O-bearing jarosites is refined using the Rietveld method. The K-jarosite is pseudotrigonal and its structure is refined in both the C2/m and the R-3m setting using single crystal data. The peaks observed in the IR and Raman spectra are identified on the basis of calculated vibrational modes of a small cluster with imposed boundary conditions. The spectroscopic data indicate that the presence of oxonium ions causes a dynamical disorder of the hydrogen atoms in the jarosite structure that could be the reason for faster dissolution with higher H3O content. The growth of K-jarosite was evaluated using SEM, AFM, and molecular simulations. SEM micrographs show crystals with (012) and, to a minor extent, triangular (001) faces. These results are in agreement with molecular simulations that show that the dipole-free (012) face is the most stable surface, followed by the (001) surface that can lower its dipole moment during relaxation. On the (012) face, the most stable step directions were identified. Only a few studies concerning the dissolution from a bulk chemical perspective exist. Thus, atomic scale dissolution mechanisms are still unknown. Fluid Cell AFM is used to directly observe morphological changes on the surface. In aqueous solution (pH 5.5) thin layers of iron oxyhydroxides are formed. By adding EDTA, the surface dissolves by a 'layer-by-layer' step displacement.
