Abstract

The ISOPHOT Serendipity Survey at 170um is well suited for studying the interstellar medium of the Milky Way. The presented work expounds how the randomly distributed scans can be used to learn something about the distribution and structure of the cold interstellar dust. Software has been developed to extract structures with sizes up 15' from the scan data. Position, angular size, surface brightness and (170um/100um) colour temperature of the dust knots are determined thereby. In the analysis of the data of Chamaeleon, the coldest dust knots turn out to coincide with dense molecular cloud cores. All observed molecular cores are detected at 170um, and often their dust temperatures are lower than the surrounding temperatures. High colour temperatures as observed in some star forming cores indicate the presence of warm circumstellar dust. In the dark core B217 the temperature and density distributions of the gas are determined from radiospectroscopic observations of the NH3-molecule. The dense core B217SW is close to hydrostatic equilibrium and could form stars in the future. The low dust temperature of 12K suggests a change of grain properties, possibly due to coagulation of dust grains. The observed similarity of gas and dust temperatures in B217 is in accordance with a study of a random sample of 14 dense cores. Finally, the temperature distributions of the cold dust knots in the nearby molecular cloud complexes in Chamaeleon, Taurus and Ophiuchus are compared. Dust temperatures below 13K are confined to regions of active star formation. The highest temperatures are correlated with a very high star formation efficiency in the Rho-Ophiuchi main cloud. Several sources are found with the Serendipity Survey at 170um which are yet undetected at 100um. They possibly contain very cold dust below 11K and constitute an important basis for further investigations.
