Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

The present dissertation analyzes three novels by contemporary Spanish women authors – Esther Tusquets, Carme Riera, and Clara Janés – in order to show how the socio-cultural concepts of space have changed since the end of Franco’s dictatorship, and how this is dealt with in literature. The main objective of the dissertation is to comprehensively explore the relationship between concepts of space and discourses of femininity/gender, the central categories of analysis being the representation of gender in space and the gendering of space. Not only traditional paradigms that the novels refer to are described, but also possible alternatives to traditional ways of locating female subjectivity, focussing on what kind of new spatial patterns can be conceptualized with respect to gender issues. The study draws on different topological approaches from literary criticism and theory, as well as from cultural studies. If space - as recent cultural theory has put in evidence - cannot be thought independently from the subject perceiving it, then we have to ask how the paradigm of female/male identity determines the perception and construction of space. Relevant aspects for the text analysis are among others: which spaces are narrated and how they are related to each other, the sensory perception and the literary representation of space, the positioning and interaction of the characters, as well as the position of the subject of narration and its relation to space, especially in their connection with other narrative elements such as characters, plot, and time. Metafictional figures of space add yet another dimension to the texts’ spatial structure. The dissertation is structured as follows: After an introduction to the overall topic of space and gender as well as an overview of relevant works literary theory and criticism, there is a methodological chapter, followed by a brief outline of the social aspects of space in general, and a review of dominant concepts of space and gender in cultural and literary history, concluding with a theoretical discussion of the analogy constructed between femininity and space. The figurations of the feminine that are discussed here reveal the correlation between spatial patterns and gender, and serve as a backdrop against which the novels can be analyzed subsequently. A chapter on spatial structures in representative novels of women authors since the Civil War (Laforet, Gaite, Rodoreda, Roig) precedes the analyses of the three main novels, enabling the reader to contextualize the three novels discussed afterwards within literary history and to identify relations between texts of different authors from different decades. For a close reading, I chose three novels by women authors from Catalan speaking regions, two of whom write in Castilian: Esther Tusquets, El mismo mar de todos los veranos (1978), Carme Riera, Una primavera per a Domenico Guarini (1981), Clara Janés, El hombre de Adén (1991). All of them commented on gender issues in interviews and written texts, and the issue of female identity is at stake in most of their prose. The corpus permits the reader to track the evolution of literary works from the transición until the beginning of the nineties, a period during which Spanish society has been confronted with a process of deep change, which has opened new mental and social perspectives also for women. For the text analysis, I differentiate between three levels of space that are closely related to each other: a) physical spaces that are inspired by real-world, social space; they provide an outer frame for the narration and, being plot spaces or spaces perceived subjectively by a character, can acquire also symbolical-metaphorical functions; b) inner or imaginary spaces that exist only within the consciousness of a character, qua imagination, as memories or phantasies; c) the metafictional dimension of textual space that addresses the typographical body of the text and the text as signifying space with narrative functions. Based upon an inventory of the different spaces and space-building elements in the novels, the relationship between culturally coded plot space, subjective modes of appropriation of space, and discursive strategies operation on the level of textual space is portrayed and related to gender representation. The synopsis of texts from the Franco-era with the three novels from the seventies till the nineties that are dealt with in a more detailed analysis reveals by which literary means traditional paradigms of space and gender are subversively deconstructed and invested with new meaning by recoding them, and how alternative spaces with utopian character are tentatively established. Thus, the analysis does not only open up new aspects for the respective novels, but the highlighted cross-references also provide insights into specifically feminine lines of tradition within Spanish literary history.
